Lacrosse the Pond

Manchester University Lacrosse

A Unique Perspective

My name is Andrew Zehr and I am from Jackson, Mississippi, USA, and am attending Newcastle University this year to (hopefully) receive my Master’s in Engineering Geology. I currently play for Newcastle University’s lacrosse team and for the Newcastle Knights Men’s lacrosse club. Now, I don’t have the most extensive lacrosse background, coming from a state where there was only one other team to play against (the rest of our games required travel to neighboring states) and playing on a team that, for the most part, only had enough guys to fill the positions on the field. But, I quickly fell in love with the sport and taught myself how to play. This was not enough, as I found out when I went to college, as the talent there was on a much higher level than I was accustomed to playing on. So I was quickly cut from the varsity squad, but made the[…]

SEMLA Roundup 26/1/2016

It was a typically frenetic set of fixtures in the SEMLA Premiership this weekend with arguably the key 3 league challengers battling to carve out a stranglehold in the division as well as a mid-table clash between two teams fighting to climb away from their rivals with East Grinstead visiting Hitchin. Last year’s league champions Spencer were at their Earlsfield home in South London where they faced premiership strugglers Bristol Bombers. Whilst their comparative league statures may give the impression the result would be a foregone conclusion, Bristol are renowned as producing combative performances and on their day can be a tough team to tackle, something Spencer were acutely aware of and keen to avoid at all costs. The hosts set about the fixture in typically dominating fashion and, with one eye on next week’s Clash of The Titans against fellow league hopefuls Hampstead, ensured they got their shooting[…]

BUCS Rundown 3/1/15

As ever, Wednesday in university in the UK means sports day, which ultimately means another game of lacrosse for our LTP students! This week we saw top of the table battles for supremacy as well as bottom of the league struggles for survival in another frantic week of university lacrosse. This week, in an ongoing battle to get away from the bottom place in the Men’s Premier North league, Rutgers alumni and 15/16 LTP Student Kevin Albert’s University of Manchester side faced Leeds Beckett at home in the fixture known as “The War of The Roses”. With the game living up to it’s name and reputation, this was a battle from start to finish with the lead changing hands several times over. Unfortunately for Kevin and the Manchester side, the thrilling end-to-end encounter finished as a 10-9 victory for the visitors from Yorkshire, leaving the Uni of Manchester team at the[…]

Start Fast, Play Fast

Well it’s been 6 weeks now since my arrival to the UK, more specifically, Manchester. As the title suggests, things over here hit the ground running, except for day 1 which was sluggish. Upon arrival at the Manchester airport, I was greeted by Sam and Chris Russell and my flat-mate (flat = apartment) Jack and his father. Immediately I could tell I was somewhere else because as I stepped off the curb, looked the wrong way to cross the street and almost got hit by a cab. Learned that lesson really quick. Later on in the week, our third flat-mate, Drew, arrived and we hit the city center for a quick bite and a pint. A quick background on myself: I am from Long Island, NY and was fortunate enough to play my college ball at DII Saint Leo University near Tampa, Florida. Leading up to and upon arrival to[…]
