Exeter was a great university for us to launch our new Master Classes at…..we left sunny Manchester at 5am to heading down the M6 towards the delights of the south coast of England. Upon arrival it was great to see the amount of reinvestment going into the university. The athletic department was having a complete make over and new complexes and fields were being built all around campus.
We delivered three different sessions in 4 hours; an hour for beginners, an hour for the second team and two hours for the 1st team. It was great to see so many new faces to our game and the amount of enthusiasm that came with them. The improvement was dramatic over the first few hours some of the newer players were really getting a grasp on what was happening and there sticks skills were improving ten fold. It was great to see the moment someone really understands something they previously didn’t.
Working with the first team was also very rewarding, we introduced some new and exciting drills before working on some specific offensive and defensive sets, which have helped them in there past few games. Prior to the camp Exeter lost a close contest to Oxford University (current southern premier league leaders) 10 – 7. Since the camp they have gone undefeated in the league and managed to beat Oxford in the return fixture 14 – 13.
One of the highlights of the camp was introducing a box lacrosse aspect to there training. Next to their field they have a fantastic 3G mini five aside court. Having stolen two bins (which we later returned) to make goals we split them into two teams and let them lose on each other in this mini cage. It was great to see the effort and intensity that went into the game, In just 20 mins we saw dramatic improvement in certain aspects such as stick protection as the importance was emphasized in such a small place.
Having finished the camp we went to The Vic one of the teams local pubs to have a bite to eat and a drink with the lads. It was great to interact with them outside of the camp, as they were such a great group of lads. Having fueled up on food we decided to head back up the M6 to Manchester.
Can’t thank Exeter enough for having us up there it was an amazing day which left us with some great memories. What this space for more Master Class updates….!
