Copa de España

Friday 14th October saw me rise early to catch a flight from Manchester to Madrid for my first trip as Head Coach of the Spain Men’s National Lacrosse Team, attending the Copa de España. Held in Cuenca, a beautiful city 100 miles outside of Madrid set in the hills of Castilla-La Mancha, the Copa de España is the pre-eminent tournament in Spanish lacrosse which sees teams from all over the country assemble to battle it out for the honour of becoming the much-coveted national tournament champions. With 7 men’s teams made up from major cities including Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cuenca, Gijon, Madrid, Salamanca and Sevilla, the tournament was a display of Spanish passion, pride and potential and the games were hard-fought and fast-paced throughout. Arriving early morning in Madrid, I met with the Team Spain Captain and one of the team’s defenders and was given a whistle-stop walking tour[…]

European Championships Day 2 Overview & Day 3 Predictions

Another huge day here at the European Championships and as expected, the day was filled with huge results and some ridiculous scorelines across the board. We start with our home nation and the hot tournament favourites, England who had to endure a challenging and gruelling battle against a strong, solid and steadfast Latvia side who were hyped prior to the tournament and look good value to cause a few upsets along the way. Latvia roared into a 3-2 first quarter lead and lead 5-e at half-time before England enjoyed a resurgent third quarter to take a 1-goal lead into the final 20 minutes at 9-8. Both teams repeatedly traded blows throughout the game and this pattern continued into the last quarter when England showed their class and confidence to see out the challenge and finish the game as 13-10 victors, a result which sees them take their 100% record into[…]

European Championships Day 1 Overview

WHAT A DAY! The 2016 European Championships opened with a bang today – unfortunately for the players the bang came from the thunder and lightning brought into town in the form of a huge storm which massively affected the opening day’s battles across the board. Thankfully, the organisers were on hand working hard to get the tournament back on track and after shifting the games around and switching pitches, all of the games were played and as expected, there was some HUGE results from all corners of Europe. Starting with our predicted game of the day, England set about sending a message to the rest of the competition that they were here and that they meant business and despite taking their foot of the gas in the second half, racked up a statement result with a 16-6 drubbing of old rivals and tournament challengers Germany. This was a timely reminder[…]

End of the Season = Start of a New Journey?

Yesterday saw the NCAA Championship Final – the official curtain-closer for the 2015/16 season, bringing an official and premature end to the lacrosse careers of thousands of seniors across the US/Canada. Even for the Tar Heel champions at UNC, it will be a bitter-sweet feeling to suddenly realise that never again will they need to rise at the crack of dawn to deal with the early morning practice nor experience the camaraderie of travelling across the country with their band of brothers/sisters to face the biggest challengers in the conference. After a 4-year journey of blood, sweat and tears through the collegiate system which has demanded so much yet offered you so much more in return, this untimely termination of thousands of lacrosse careers seems brutal, harsh and unnecessarily premature. Throughout high school all you dreamed of was playing ball at college. From receiving your offer letter to becoming an[…]
